When it comes to the traditional clothes in Orihuela, they have evolved with the passing of time, but their connection today is totally handmade.
At present they are only worn for the main fiestas and always in a voluntary way, just to keep the traditions going really.
The suits and dresses date back to the 18th century when there was a strong French influence, especially among the aristocrats, these are still used for the fiestas today, and the main features are:
The men?s suits are mainly made up from silk, cloth, wool, velvet, linen among other fabrics. The main colours are black and white.
A suit made up of trousers, waistcoat, jacket, dress coat, capes, tights, shirt, girdle and complements like a hat, buckle shoes, espadrilles, canes and a tie, always sticking to the traditional dress code.
The ladies clothes are made up of a dress, blouse (that covers all the body from the shoulders to the knees), scarf, underskirts, a ?basquiña? (an outer skirt used at religious ceremonies) and an apron.
As complements they wear capes, tights, garters, jewellery, shoes, combs, gold and silver buttons, and fans. The main colours for these beautiful dresses are blue, green and white.
